Richard Southard Merrick was born on 26 Jun 1911 in Mendenhall, Chester, Pennsylvania, the second son of Robert John Merrick Jr and Edna W Martin.[1] In 1918, when Richard was about seven years old his parents divorced and he and his brother Leon would live with their father in Kennett, Chester, Pennsylvania.[2] Sometime in the early 1920's, Richard's father, Robert, took Leon with him to Texas leaving Richard to be shuffled between his mother and grandparents. When his mother remarries on 31 July 1922 to a Mahlon Charles Harner, Richard was living with his grandparents Lee and Mary Martin.[3]
1924 was not a good year for the 12-13 year old Richard. On 6 Jan 1924 his great uncle Richard Merrick dies, on 21 Jun 1924 his great aunt Ellen Merrick Farrar dies, on 4 Aug 1924 his grandfather Robert John Merrick dies and on 20 Dec 1924 his grandmother Mary Walker Martin dies. It is believed that his father had returned from Texas by this time to attend the many funerals and the following year Richard had a new step-mother when is father marries Elizabeth Jenkins on 24 Oct 1925.[4]
